Google-Kingsoft Powerword 2.0 conflicts with Acrobat Reader 9.3

February 13th, 2010 Engputer 2 comments

I have just downloaded several ebooks in pdf version from the internet. Sometimes I can open these books easily, but sometimes I can’t – Acrobat Reader will freeze whenever I tried to open it. Meanwhile, I also found my Google-Kingsoft Powerword works abnormally too!

I tried to close Google-Kingsoft Powerword, and Acrobat Reader works perfect for me; and when Acrobat Reader isn’t activated, my Google-Kingsoft Powerword works fine.

I tried to submit this problem via Google-Kingsoft Powerword Community page. But I can’t log into the system neither in Firefox nor IE. Um…does the community server also need to take a break during Chinese Lunar New Year holiday?

lol…

Google Buzz – The likes and dislikes

February 10th, 2010 Engputer 1 comment

I am totally unprepared for the changes in Google Email. This morning when I open my gmail as usual, I found Google Buzz’s introduction page. It’s a new function and it works just as simple as twitter does.

While the people in my office they are using GMAIL service too, but it seems they have not the buzz activated in their account – which made me very satisfied and lonley, lol.

OK, here let us talk about buzz.

Here is the screenshot that I have adjusted my buzz:

Google Buzz

As you can see the buzz is just under the inbox, and the interface is just like a twitter. You can also enable other functions in buzz, you can get youtube, twitter updates automatically to your buzz. To my surprise, I have been visiting two sites frequently, fmmorpg.com and wanzhuoyou.com, the updates on these sites can also be shown into my buzz page. While engputer.com is not in the list, why?

Connected Sites

As you can see from the above picture, you can add and remove the updates about these sites to your buzz. But till now, I still didn’t figure out how to add or remove other sites to my buzz. Maybe in the future, gmail and google reader will combine into the buzz?

Till now, I am still alone in buzz…I am waiting for my friends to activate this function and see the interactions. I like it because it’s simple; I dislike it because due to this, Chinese GOV will  have a very simple “reason” to ban Gmail service in China.

February 3rd, 2010 Engputer 3 comments

1、删除360杀毒软件;

2、开始菜单搜索处输入CMD,然后输入netsh winsock reset catalog回车;

What’s the future of micro blog in China?

January 29th, 2010 Engputer 1 comment

More and more people pay attention to Chinese Internet since google announced closing China’s offices. More and more Chinese netizens are getting to know about facebook.com, twitter.com, youtube.com. They never accessed to these sites before and they won’t in the future since China’s Internet is a “Free” internet.

We don’t have facebook but we have xiaonei.com; we don’t have youtube but we have cntv.cn; we don’t have twitter, but it seems that there isn’t a Chinese version of twitter site in China yet.

More and more people want to make another twitter-like site in China. SINA, Follow5.com and other SNS sites are trying their best to compete in this field and want to become the winner.

But let’s step back and review this market. In China, the most real SNS is QQ, an IM software just like MSN, but much much better than MSN, made by Tencent.com. You can interact with your friends very easily via QQ and QQ has everything that SNS sites should have. But the problem is QQ is not an open platform and it doesn’t provide API to developers. There isn’t any threat to QQ in China right now since there isn’t a company can compete with QQ.

Take XiaoNei.com for example. Xiaonei.com is currently the largest SNS site in China. With so many years of growing, Xiaonei.com has also brought up their own desktop tool. Their purpose is very simple: By doing so they hope to gradually grab QQ’s market. There are some other companies in China making their own IM too, such as 51.com, SNDA.com, Taobao.com etc. But none of these comapanies succeded in shaking QQ’s position. Even MSN can’t beat QQ either since MSN is only widely used among white collars in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. But everyone has a QQ number and the teens who were born after 1990 are faithful users of QQ. They would spend over 10 RMB a month for buying avatars.

So what’s the future of micro blog in China?

There are different possibilities. But no matter how successful you are, you will compete directly with QQ. If QQ opens the QQ status API, this will become unbreakable advatange and it can destroy any new competitor in this field.

But we would like to see that day coming since being slaved by QQ isn’t a good thing too.

Another thought is that if you have tried QQ International version, you will find that it could beat MSN in USA. But that’s another story or that might be only a legend that we are not going to talk about today.

Google’s China Stance: More about Business than Thwarting Evil

January 14th, 2010 Engputer No comments

Writing about China as an American is always tricky, but nowhere near as tricky as what an American company faces doing business there. Let me say upfront, I don’t envy Google. The company has had more success in China than a lot of other big Valley names, but isn’t and will likely never be the market leader. And to get that far, many in the West feel Google has had to compromise its “do-no-evil” ethics by agreeing to some of the government’s censorship rules. Google has been damned either way: China is too big of a market to ignore, but getting as far as they have has come at a steep price to their reputation and international (read: Western) integrity.

Enter the now famous blog post (that was notably, only on the English-language site) saying that Google was no longer playing by the Chinese government’s rules and was prepared to close down Chinese operations if it came to that. Valley elites erupted into applause on Twitter and blogs saying Google was showing more backbone than the US government and was a model of integrity for the world.

I’ll give Google this much: They’re taking a bad situation and making something good out of it, both from a human and business point of view. I’m not saying human rights didn’t play into the decision, but this was as much about business. Lest we get too self-righteous as Westerners, we should remember three things:

1. Google’s business was not doing well in China. Does anyone really think Google would be doing this if it had top market share in the country? For one thing, I’d guess that would open them up to shareholder lawsuits. Google is a for-profit, publicly-held company at the end of the day. When I met with Google’s former head of China Kai-fu Lee in Beijing last October, he noted that one reason he left Google was that it was clear the company was never going to substantially increase its market share or beat Baidu. Google has clearly decided doing business in China isn’t worth it, and are turning what would be a negative into a marketing positive for its business in the rest of the world.

2. Google is ready to burn bridges. This is not how negotiations are done in China, and Google has done well enough there to know that. You don’t get results by pressuring the government in a public, English-language blog post. If Google were indeed still working with the government this letter would not have been posted because it has likely slammed every door shut, as a long-time entrepreneur in China Marc van der Chijs and many others said on Twitter. This was a scorched earth move, aimed at buying Google some good will in the rest of the world; Chinese customers and staff were essentially just thrown under the bus.

3. This is only going to be a trickier issue in the next decade. Think the Shanda acquisition of Mochi Media was an isolated event? Think again. Chinese Web companies are building huge cash hoards and valuable stock currencies and it’s still a comparatively young Web market. Increasingly, these companies could be likely buyers of US startups—not the other way around. Will the Valley’s rhetoric stick then?

This may be the most shocking part: In retrospect Yahoo has played China far better than Google. It pulled out of the country years ago, knowing it wouldn’t win and owns nearly 40% of the Alibaba, a company that very definitely knows how to grow in China. Entrepreneur and angel investor in China Bill Bishop —who hasn’t always agreed with my China coverage in the past—pointed this out, adding “Not often Yahoo looks smarter than Google.”

Office 2010 Tech Preview

September 9th, 2009 Engputer No comments

或者直接在运行/搜索里面输入services.msc。

> Initialize

> Open

> GetInstalledSkuIds

SkuId = 128a057a-7e95-4063-b296-c54c5f3d3f3a
eStatus = SL_LICENSING_STATUS_IN_GRACE_PERIOD
dwGraceTime = 1D 23:37
dwTotalGraceDays = 30 days
hrReason = 4004F00C
qwExpiration = 2010/10/31

OK.

> Close

> Initialize

> Open

SkuId = 128a057a-7e95-4063-b296-c54c5f3d3f3a
eStatus = SL_LICENSING_STATUS_IN_GRACE_PERIOD
dwGraceTime = 29D 23:37
dwTotalGraceDays = 30 days
hrReason = 4004F00C
qwExpiration = 2010/10/31

> Quit

即可。

1. AlonWeb http://alonweb.com/

AlonWeb uses the OpenVPN software which is malware free. So it’s pretty safe to use AlonWeb VPN service. Just download the OpenVPN client software below and then download the Alonweb certificate and configuration file. Copy the configuration file in the config folder in OpenVPN installation directory. Now register for a new user account on AlonWeb VPN service. Connect through OpenVPN using the username and password which you just registered.

2. UltraVPN https://www.ultravpn.fr

UltraVPN is similar to AlonWeb. It is also based on OpenVPN service. It is also very easy to use. Just download the UltraVPN client from below and register for UltraVPN service here. Right click the UltraVPN icon placed in the status bar and select connect.

3. HotSpot http://anchorfree.com/

HotSpot has long been the best and the only VPN service that was very popular and was easy to use. But now I have abondoned it because of its advertisements that come on while we are browsing the internet.
